Inspired by Cindy Sherman’s iconoclastic series of staged film stills, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love, and nostalgic pop culture, The Table reimagines Asian identity through a revisionist lens, offering an alternative representation of the Asian/Western diasporic experience. Created in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, this project centers on the dining table as the heart of family life, tradition, and memory—a focal point for stories that were largely absent in 1980s pop culture.
Through a series of evocative images and motion, The Table brings viewers into the intimate world of a Chinese household, where details such as East Asian dishes, a lovingly curated tablescape, and the nuanced decorations of a family’s dining room set the scene. These snapshots capture everything from a mother and daughter’s breakfast on a school morning to family gatherings filled with laughter, illustrating how the table becomes a space of connection, cultural heritage, and celebration. By focusing on everyday moments like these, we aim to offer a fresh perspective on Asian representation in media and share Asian stories without the weight of stereotypes. Both scenes highlight the dining table as a place where memories are made, family bonds are deepened, and the beauty of Asian identity is celebrated in all its diversity and warmth.
